About Brett Deacon

As far back as I can remember, the natural world has been a source of fascination and reverence for me. After moving to Minnesota in 2001 and spending weekends backpacking on the Superior Hiking Trail, photography became a serious part of my interaction with nature. Unsatisfied with mediocre photographs that failed to do justice to the splendor of Minnesota's North Shore, I invested in a 35mm camera system and began my evolution into a serious nature photographer. In the process my way of seeing the world was quite literally transformed.

When I moved to Wyoming in 2004, the scenery I formerly dreamt of visiting on summer vacations now lay on my doorstep. I spent 10 wonderful years exploring the Medicine Bow National Forest in southeast Wyoming as well as the Rocky Mountain region more broadly. In 2014, I moved to Australia and traded the mountains for the beach. Along the way, I've been fortunate to visit some of the world's most beautiful places, including Kenya and the South Island of New Zealand. I have spent thousands of hours honing my skills with film and digital cameras and the tools of the digital darkroom. The images on this website represent a selection of my favorite photographs and each makes a beautiful print at most any size. I hope you enjoy them, and that they impart in you a sense of wonder, respect, and stewardship for the natural world.

I've been fortunate to experience success as a nature photographer in more ways than I ever imagined. My photographs have appeared in numerous magazines, including regional (Wyoming Wildlife, Lake Superior Magazine) and national (Backpacker) outlets. I have won numerous photo contests, won awards at juried art fairs, published in national calendars, and even had my photos on billboards. I have a dozen framed photos on display at the University of Wyoming campus, including a 2 x 10 foot panoramic print in the Senate Chambers. I am most honored to have my photography welcomed into the homes of hundreds of patrons who have deemed it worthy of display in their living rooms, kitchens, and bedrooms. There is no higher compliment to me. I strive to be worthy of such a high standard, and do not post any image for sale on this website unless I would be proud to see it on display in my own home.

For those interested in technical matters, I am proficient in a large number of technical aspects of the photographic process apart from its artistry. This website includes images captured with film and digital cameras, including a 35mm camera, an old-school large format camera shooting 4x5 inch sheets of film, and digital SLR cameras from 10 to 42 megapixels. My current camera is a Sony Alpha A99II. I have mastered the art of scanning film on a 35mm Nikon scanner as well as an incredible but challenging drum scanner I purchased on Ebay. I am fluent in the use of Photoshop, Lightroom, DxO Optics Pro, Photomatix, and Aurora HDR to edit and optimise digital photographs. Taking an excellent photograph is but the first step in a lengthy process that results in an excellent print. I am proud to have acquired the expertise necessary to produce fine art prints of the highest quality.
